A Continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) is a device used for the measurement of gases and particulate matter resulting from combustion in industrial processes. It is mainly used in Coal-fired power plants, Power generation, Oil & Gas plants, Waste incinerations, Petrochemical and Chemical plants. A CEMS system comprises sampling, conditioning, analytical, and software components designed to provide continuous and real-time measurements of pollutant concentrations by analysing representative data of the flue gas. The major pollutants measured by an emission monitoring system include Carbon monoxide (CO), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen oxides (NOx), Hydrogen chloride (HCI), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone (O3) and heavy metals such as mercury (Hg). Besides enhancing the safety of an industrial site, CEMS also ensures that the facility complies with emission control standards.
How does CEMS work?
The most common type of CEMS is an extractive monitoring system, in which the first step in the process of measurement involves extracting a sample of gas emissions with a probe. The sample flue gas, which can be hot, wet or sticky, is filtered, conditioned, and transferred to one or more gas analyzers. Gas analyzers evaluate the concentration level of pollutants within the sample, which is then transmitted to a data acquisition system for collection and recording of emission data.
